The Importance of Early Detection: Pediatric ADHD Screening

Kaufman, TX, is home to the two locations of Children's Medical Clinics. Dr. C. Lewis Turner, III, along with his professional and skilled staff, screens children for ADHD. He sees children from birth to 21 years daily, providing services to the residents in Kaufman and eleven counties, from Grand Prairie to Gilmer and Corsicana to Princeton.

Our pediatric physician and his skilled staff are specifically educated with advanced training in child healthcare and address many issues arising in our children's lives, including learning disabilities and behavioral problems in the growth and development of children.

One issue our doctor wants to discuss with you is the importance of early detection of this behavior.

Variances in ADHD

A person’s ADHD symptoms may change over their life, but there are certain subtypes people fall into that are used to identify their needs. The subtypes are distinguished by whether someone’s presentation is predominantly inattentive, predominately hyperactive and impulsive, or whether they present as both.

Why is Early Detection Important?

Children's Medical Clinics in Kaufman, TX, explains that because ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental disorder, we are seeing more children who struggle to focus and control their actions and behaviors. This condition carries over into adulthood, so early detection means that interventions start early to manage behaviors and help guarantee long-term success into adulthood.

All children become hyperactive at some point, and this is normal. However, when the signs of this condition interfere with the child's daily life, family and friend relationships, schoolwork, and extracurricular activities, interventions must be started early. Early detection through screening means,

  • Assistance with academic performance
  • Extra support in school
  • Identifying needs early
  • Adapting teaching methods
  • Recommending support for parents.
  • Pointing parents to the right necessary resources to help the child
  • Increasing self-esteem
  • Teaching coping techniques to parents and child

Early screening can also help uncover other conditions often associated with ADHD, like anxiety and depression, and can lessen their impact on the child's life with early treatment recommended.
