What to Expect During a Sports Physical for Children

When your child needs to have a sports physical, this is to ensure that your child is healthy enough to participate in sports. At Children's Medical Clinics in Kaufman, TX, Dr. C. Turner Lewis works with children to provide the sports physical they need in order to play sports. A sports physical helps to prevent injuries, as any issues your child may have physically will be addressed prior to starting sports. If your child is not able to play sports because they haven't had a sports physical yet, Children's Medical Clinics can help.

What to Expect During a Sports Physical

A sports physical is a physical to determine if the child is prepared to play sports without risking injuries due to an existing problem. During the exam, you will discuss your child's medical history, as well as family history that is relevant to the child. You will likely discuss any recent injuries, medical procedures, allergies your child may have, or any medications your child is prescribed. If your child has been experiencing any symptoms such as dizziness, trouble breathing, or headaches, it's important to let the provider know what is going on. A sports physical is much like a traditional exam, and is thorough enough to clear your child to play sports.

The Physical Exam for a Sports Physical

During the physical exam, the provider will check your child's blood pressure, height, weight, and listen to their lungs and heart. The abdomen is checked using light pressure with the hands, while the eyes, nose and throat will also be observed. A vision screening, urinalysis, or blood work may be part of the sports physical. If any issues are noted, follow-up treatment may be required to clear your child to play sports. A sports physical is generally less comprehensive than a traditional physical, but the provider will further investigate if they find any concerns during the sports physical. Once the exam is over, your child should be cleared to play sports this season.
